It’s the Year of Young People yet at least one recent industry survey makes sober reading for the hospitality industry with the suggestion that less than 25% of young people in the UK will consider a career in hospitality.

See Ryan's story, he is 18 years old and works at Radisson Blu Edinburgh.

Ryan Loy, recently recruited into a M&E role by Radisson Blu Edinburgh through an innovative employability programme run by Glasgow based training provider HUB International, has a more enlightened perspective on the industry.

“There are so many hospitality roles it’s very likely you’ll like one of them!”

Just turned 18, Edinburgh born Ryan Loy (pictured below) has found his calling.  At Christmas he was unemployed but he’s progressed into hospitality following his April ‘graduation’ from a HUB International / Radisson Blu Edinburgh training programme.  The chance to interact with guests in M&E and bar roles and start to achieve industry qualifications has seen Ryan’s self-confidence soar.

Ryan explained: “I’ve tried the bank and thought of the Army. Now I’ve found what I want to do.  I’m really enjoying the everyday variety and face-to-face interaction with people. You never get bored and I’ve learnt a whole host of skills in a very short period of time. Ok, quickly moving 150 chairs up several floors for an event can be challenging!”

It would be his dream to bump into rapper Eminem in the hotel lobby but in truth he’s content with meeting all the guests. Ryan added: “I like working with people and I like making them happy.  This role has really brought me out of my shell.  In fact, it has changed my life!”

The former pupil of Holyrood High in Scotland’s capital city also offers some sage advice to his peers: “Give hospitality a shot. The hours can be unsociable but they are also flexible and I get plenty of time off.  I think the most important thing is your attitude. You have to listen, want to learn and always put in 100% effort.”

Wise words from a young man who is already planning his hospitality future: “I’m aiming high.  I’ll just keep doing my best and see where it takes me!”

It’s the Year of Young People let's encourage them to embrace the industry we love.
