Former Hilton Double Tree by Treetops in Aberdeen closed its doors today leaving over 70 members of staff suddenly unemployed.

The property on Aberdeen’s Springfield Road was managed by Hilton until 1st February 2020 when it was rebranded to Aberdeen Treetops.

The last 24 hours have been an emotional rollercoaster to all members of staff working at the hotel as they were informed they would be out of job from this morning onwards.

Hundreds of people are expressing their concern on social media, among them many brides and grooms who had their wedding booked at the hotel.

A spokesperson from Hilton said:

"DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen Treetops Hotel has ceased to operate under the DoubleTree by Hilton brand. Customers can choose from five hotels in Hilton’s portfolio, including DoubleTree by Hilton Aberdeen City Centre, within the Aberdeen area and a further 19 hotels across Scotland."

Events coordinator Jayne Groundwater posted on Linkedin:

"When I undertook my employment at the Treetops in July 2019 I never imagined by February 2020 that this would be terminated. Myself and 70+ staff members were told on Monday to pack our things and not to come back unless we heard otherwise. Devastation, confusion, sadness and anger is just some of the emotions we are feeling, as we have to put our lives on hold. With no legal advice being provided and little communication from the company we are at a stand still. Ultimately all 70+ staff are now unemployed with little hope the hotel will continue to trade. These 70+ workers, who are no longer my colleagues, but are my friends are the kindest, most talented people I’ve met and we will continue to help and support one another through this tough time".

Bride to be Katrina Tough posted on Facebook:

"My wedding is booked here for June! I heard nothing from the hotel and it’s not looking very promising"

Another bride to be, Fiona Milne, continued:

"Hope this isn’t true! My wedding is booked for the 29th February. I called at teatime and was told that everything was ok and itwas still going ahead. I am devastated if this is true."

A number of members of staff stated that the property had lost their Hilton franchise due to failing to meet the required standards.

Local hotels are showing their support towards customers affected as well as members of staff.

The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa posted on social media:

"We are so sad to hear the news about the Treetops Hotel which was one of the first hotels Stewart Spence managed from 1968-70, the end of an era indeed!
Our hearts go out to all staff who have lost their jobs and also to all patrons that have weddings, functions or celebrations booked.
We would be happy to speak to any staff looking for banqueting/bar work and would be delighted to assist anyone looking for a date for a wedding or function. Please call us on 01224 861000"

Peter Walker, managing director at Maryculter House posted:

"Here at Maryculter House, we have began our refurbishment programme, and as such, we are actively recruiting for additional team members in all departments to cope with the busy season we foresee ahead, so please email me. Alternatively, if you have an event at said named hotel, and the worst does happen, please do get in touch to see if we can help."

Clare Fraser, general manager for the Aberdeen Northern Hotel posted:

"I am the General Manager for the Aberdeen Northern Hotel and I will help any couples that have been let down on their special day. I can certainly look into doing a good deal for anyone who has already forked out alot of money. This cannot be an easy time."

We have contacted the management to clarify the reasons for sudden closure.
