One of Scotland’s most historic and intriguing hotels has recently enjoyed a painstaking restoration to its outer fabric involving scientific examination of the original stonework and a hunt for a match across the country.

The stunning A Listed 15th century Mercure Perth Hotel is notable for having a Mill Stream running through it. Guests can follow the water rushing past underneath them as the river splits to power the Mill’s wheel (not operational but used as a decorative element) opposite Reception and then joins and splits again underneath the Bar. Glass viewing points help create an amazing experience.

The hotel also features a magnificent King Pin Roof in the main banqueting room, The Kinnoull Suite which is believed to be one of the very few built in this style and still in existence.

The mills date back to the 10th century although there were many re-builds usually as a result of fires. Closed in the 1930s the derelict building was developed as an hotel in the 1970s.

The examination of the original stonework was carried out by the Scottish Lime Centre Trust,” comments the hotel’s General Manager, Gabriella Maltesics. “The stone would originally have come from a local quarry, but they are all closed, and after a thorough search a match was found at a quarry in Fife some 25 miles away.”

The existing mortar in the walls was also examined and the team found much of it had been incorrectly specified with cement instead of lime based mortar. Under Listed Building consent the entire building has been re-pointed with correct materials.

It’s been a huge task but a real labour of love for us all,” said Ms Maltesics. “The base stonework along Paul Street and West Mill Street was heavily eroded and replaced. At the same time we took the opportunity to repair other areas that were either damaged or had been badly repaired in the past. No machinery was used, just hand tools only. The Hotel now looks magnificent and we are delighted to be welcoming guests after our recent closure due to lockdown.”

Featuring thick stone walls, solid oak beams and views of the stream below, the beautiful watermill makes the Mercure Perth Hotel one of the most sought-after hotels in Scotland. Locted in the heart of the historic town on West Mill Street, it’s perfectly positioned for all local attractions with execellent facilities for business and leisure breaks.
