The owner of Ardfin Estate in Jura has invested around £50m renovating Jura House and farm buildings since buying the estate in 2010 for £3.5 million.

Originally from Australia, Greg Coffey was nicknamed "The Wizard of Oz" after making around £430m as a young city hedge fund trader. He's chosen the Inner Hebrides to retire at the age of 41.

The beautiful estate in Jura is of great historic importance as it was where George Orwell wrote his dystopian best-seller 1984. Orwell had a torturous stay on the island during this period as he was close to death and beset by creative demons (learn more here).

As well as the £50m investment Mr Coffey has also developed a £20m 18-hole golf course on the Island, with the help of 85 workers (almost half the island’s population).

A local resident who has seen the renovated property, said:

“It’s £20,000 for the house, for one night, but the house is stunning, absolutely mind-blowing, it’s beyond description, you would be forgiven for thinking a family had lived there for 600 years. The house has actually tripled in size – and it was already a big mansion. The swimming pool is bigger than Jura Church and they have converted all the farm buildings into luxury apartments, all very individual and unique, there are no two things the same, no expense has been spared. There is a bar and a dining area you go to for your meals, they are not self-catering.”

We must confess this is one of the greatest project of the decade for us as it has enormous impact on Scottish Tourism. We look forward to sharing images and further news this Spring.
